WINNER
T’was The Holiday Before Christmas
'Twas
the holiday before Christmas, when all through the farm,
It was peaceful and quiet, no seeming alarm;
The chickens were clucking without a care,
Knowing all the while they need not despair.
The cows
were nestled all snug in their beds,
No visions of hamburgers danced in their heads;
The geese, the ducks, and I Turkey Tess,
Had just settled down by the tree to digresses.
When
out of the blue I saw a big, shiny blade,
I sprang from the roost and right there I prayed;
Then away to safety I flew like a flash,
Tore through the corn and knocked over the trash.
The chopping
block covered in new-fallen snow,
Froze my thoughts of the impending blow;
When what to my bulging eyes should appear,
But Farmer Fred’s eye, was shedding a tear.
With that he laid the ax down to rest,
And elected me as his honored guest,
More rapid then eagles, the courses he served,
T’was the Thanksgiving feast, I long deserved.
When Teresa Nordheim is not enjoying the company of
her husband and two daughters at their home in Puyallup, WA, she is busy
reading, writing, and submitting stories. She has had stories published
in children’s magazines, both online and print. She dreams of seeing
her picture books line the shelves in bookstores and will continue writing
until the little voices in herhead tell her she can stop.

RUNNER-UP
In early autumn, Terrence the turkey began his ingenious plan. He was convinced
that he could avoid the dreaded Thanksgiving meal by disguising himself
as something non-edible. Standing perfectly still in his clever tree disguise,
Terrence soon became unbearably bored and decided to try something else.
Next, he tried to be like Farmer Bean’s hound Humphrey. This was exhausting,
and his bark sounded funny anyway. The other animals mocked and teased as
Terrence continued to search for a new identity. He tried to be a scarecrow,
a shovel, and even a fall mum in Mrs. Bean’s flower garden. Still,
with each new idea, he found himself hopelessly incapable of being anything
other than a turkey. Terrence grew more and more discouraged, especially
when he noticed that the Bean family had begun watching him very closely.
Little Belinda Bean was so amused that she came to visit her silly bird
every afternoon, and even the neighbors stopped by just to see what strange
thing he would do next. Terrence refused to give up, and in the end, his
plan worked. He hadn’t fooled Farmer Bean, but no one could ever eat
the talk of the town and little Belinda’s favorite pet.
Deena Shuffler lives North Carolina with her husband,
Mark, and son, Jonathan. She enjoys writing young adult fiction, picture
books, and chapter books. She also enjoys graphic design and illustration,
camping, photography, and walking with her beagle, Daisy Duke.
