Writing with the Classics: Inspiration and Imitation, Research and Retellings

Whether you love classic novels or would rather avoid the canon, this workshop will explore how to write with the classics, including understanding where your story fits in different traditions, finding inspiration in classic novels, and learning storytelling techniques from the greats.

We’ll also discuss how to use classic novels for research for both historical fiction and contemporary stories, whether you’re writing picture books, or young adult and middle-grade novels.

Finally, we’ll explore theories, techniques, and best practices for creating retellings and continuations, with a focus on writing for children and young adults.
