Hello area SCBWI illustrators!
2024 is flying by and it is time to gather again. Mark your calendars for Saturday June 1st at 7:00 pm for our next illustrators Mingle on Zoom.
Let’s talk about humor in picture books and illustration, because we need more humor in our lives, and in our books! Kids love humor, but it is a tough genre to crack. What makes a story funny? What makes an illustration funny? Even if we aren’t inclined to create humorous books, what can we learn from exploring them?
Please bring 1 or 2 books that you feel are great examples of humor in picture books. Remember, humor can be subtle and heartwarming or off-the-wall laugh-out-loud, so any titles that you feel qualify are perfect. AND If you want to include one book that has humorous intent that you just don’t get, you may share it as well so we can start to unpack techniques that work (and do not) in this challenging genre.
We won’t have time to read the titles, but if you can be prepared with an overview pitch and spread or two to share that really expresses why you feel the book(s) succeed(s), that would be perfect!
I can’t wait to see and hear about your funny books. You have a few weeks to start researching if you don't have any titles in mind! It is a good excuse to visit the library (in case you needed one).
An RSVP is helpful for planning (but not necessary) so feel free to jump on the meeting even if it is your first one. We are a small welcoming group!
