Your Heart is Your Hook

Sometimes we feel as if we are wrong for the industry, or just not writing what's trendy. But there's a way around it. If you can dig deeply enough into your own heart, you can transcend the trends, or even start a new one. Joyce will share examples of books that broke in against all odds and we will do exercises to figure out what sparks of genius are lurking in that heart of yours.

Joyce Sweeney is an author and Director of Kidlit for The Seymour Agency. They have published fourteen young adult novels, many of which have won awards. They are also the author of two chapbooks of poetry. Most recently, they have been writing historical novels.

Joyce was a creative writing teacher, mentor and coach for over 25 years. They also published a plotting how-to book, Plotting Your Novel With The Plot Clock.(Giantess Press, 2019) At this writing, they have successfully mentored 86 authors to traditional publishing contracts.

In 2020 they joined The Seymour agency, and represent picture books, middle grade and young adult novels.   

Their hobbies are astrology, collecting illustration art, and animal causes of all kinds. They live in Coral Springs with their husband, Jay and two giant rescue cats, Willow and Captain Jack.


We hope you’ll join us after the workshop at Panera Bread in Mission Bay Plaza. 20437 State Road 7 Boca Raton, FL 33498. Make a right out of the library onto 441. Make a right at Glades Road, then a right into the Mission Bay Plaza. Panera will be close to Glades Road.

Robert Herrick’s Biography

Robert Herrick has self-published three picture books, one grammar book, and three books that help authors on their self-publishing journey.

He is an award-winning screenwriter and author who worked for 20 years as a software developer. He helped create over fifty commercially released games and educational titles, including the best-selling Cabela’s Big Game Hunter Series. He sold his company to Activision in 2000. Robert transitioned to writing children’s books and has been a member of the SCBWI for 20 years. He runs a monthly Self-publishing Zoom Support Group.

His self-publishing writing and illustrating website is Uwritekidsbooks.com. That’s where you can find the free PDF downloads of his How to Publish Your Book Without Breaking the Bank series. His kids’ book website is NDRPress.com. There, you will find his three children’s books and grammar book.

He lives in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
