SCBWI Japan hosts a network of published and aspiring translators of Japanese children’s literature (picture books through young adult) into English. Activities and offerings include:

The SCBWI Japan Translation Group The SCBWI Japan Translation Group (a Google Group) is currently open to SCBWI members and non-members. Topics discussed on this email list include Japanese to English children’s translation opportunities, professional events, and list-members’ projects. Please contact SCBWI Japan for an invitation.

The SCBWI Japan Translation Group Blog The SCBWI Japan Translation Group blog features posts by members and friends of the SCBWI Japan Translation Group. Posts introduce Japanese children’s literature and aspects of translation, as well as interviews and information about new publications. In addition, in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami disasters on March 11, 2011, the blog currently highlights the children’s literature and culture of Tohoku (northeastern Japan). The word Ihatov in the blog’s URL discussed on the blog’s Ihatov page comes from the work of Tohoku poet and children’s author Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933).

Translation Events The SCBWI Japan Translation Group has held seven biennial Translation Day events, in 20102012201420162018, 2020 and 2022. These days of presentations, critiques, and conversation for published and pre-published translators of Japanese children’s literature (picture books through young adult) have drawn translators from around and outside Japan. Featured speakers have included acclaimed translators, editors, and other experts appearing in-person and virtually.
