We are a thriving community of writers, illustrators and translators and we welcome anyone with a professional interest in children's publishing. We hold meetings in Cape Town and Gauteng as well as hosting regular online meetings to allow members from across the country to participate. Meetings include critique sessions, illustrating and writing workshops, opportunities to develop your craft and presentations by editors of publishing houses and other experts from the publishing industry. If you have just signed up as a premium (paid) member and have South Africa as your region, WELCOME! and please start here:


  1. Email our Regional Advisor (RA) - Emily House - at southafrica-ra@scbwi.org to let her know that you have joined. She will then add you to the relevant communication channels and let our website administrator know to add you to our SA Members page.
  2. Please also sign up to our quarterly newsletter using the subscribe form at the bottom of this page. (This newsletter is open to anyone who is interested, not just paying members.)

Awards & Grants

SCBWI awards and grants offer support to help emerging authors, illustrators, and translators (both published and pre-published) in the field of children’s literature.

To be eligible for our "Featured Illustrator" spot, please make sure you are a current, paid up, South Africa member and that your profile is filled out with your bio, website/contact info, and a good number of high quality portfolio pieces. You will be contacted by our website administrator if you have been selected for an upcoming feature.
